In class we focused specifically on advertising propaganda in our discussions.
We looked at techniques which make use of signifiers and signified through implied meanings to get the consumer to consider what they are being told further.
A good example of this would be in propaganda that sells sexual connotations.

Week 2: Words, Signs and Text (1)
Discussion in week 2 was prompted by the first reading:
Nikki Gemmell (2013) 'Open To Question' from The Weekend Australian Magazine, February 16-17, 2013, p.8
Our discussion delved into accepting the 'unsure' state of mind, being okay with not understanding and not having a made up state of mind. We put the idea into situations, namely conspiracy theories. The comment was made that resonated with me, was that conspiracy theories arise from people who cannot be complacent with not having a definitive opinion or answer, who for lack of answers to the questions asked by others find what answers they can and create their own truth.
